Wow, sense my last blog, the biggest and saddest story is the loss of my dear Mother Sally Sue Herr. I was fortunate to spend some quality time with my Mom before she succumbed to cancer on December 9th. What a tragedy to see some one you love die due to cells gone bad in their body. I went back twice to see Mom and was there when she passed. I miss her dearly and think of her every day.<br />
<br />
Since my Mom's death I devote all my time to creating pots. I participated in a local holiday faire and was juried in to a local cooperative art gallery. Internet sales are consistent as well. I create and post as I go along. I find inspiration it what I love and I feel blessed every day to be able to create.<br />
<br />
Sense my last post, I was working with porcelain and doing sgraffito with more success in finding a terra sigilatta color and glaze that worked with my clay body. <a href="http://johnbrittpottery.com/shop/i-need-a-cone-6-glaze-that-wont-craze/" target="_blank">Thanks to John Britt for doing the work on finding glazes that don't craze</a>. John does the hard work and I pay with for the effort. Thanks John.<br />
<br />
Now I moved on to working with a red clay body. I bought 500 pounds. In the beginning, I was dubious and wondered what I did. I knew the background would be different for sgraffito work, so I needed light terra sigilatta colors. The first tests revealed that 3-5% mason stains were inadequate to pop thru the glaze I was using. Later, I read a few articles about 1:1 lithium carbonate and gersley borate wash. Here are my results.<br />

I am super happy with these results. I was looking for a worn or distressed look and a more atmospheric affect, that you would get in a salt or soda firing. This led me to play around with abstract forms. Here is a set of vases that I layered dark terra sigillata under lighter terra sigs, sanding and scratching in between applications.<br />

At this point in time, I have about 50 pounds left of this cone 6 Oregon Red clay. I really enjoyed working with it. I will get more in the future. But for now, back to porcelain and experimenting with lightly colored chuns, oribes, and celadons.<br />

Think Big is an online branding series course for potters and is taught over six-weeks with interviews with successful clay artists and marketing agents. The course is taught by Ben Carter of Tales of a Red Clay
Rambler Podcast and artist-designer Molly Hatch. I highly recommend taking this course for any beginning or established potters. I am learning a lot and I think it helps me fine tune some of my approaches to getting the story about my pottery to the people who like my work.<br />
<br />
Lately, I opened the kiln to see some nice results of my sgraffito work on stoneware. Below are some cups of local wildlife that are found in our scenic state. Oyster catchers, a bird I see usually in May along rocky beaches on islands across the bay. To me they are harbingers of spring. This year I took a couple of trips to Prince William Sound and saw a lot more of these birds. I love their call and the way they walk on the rocks. They earned a place my cups and platters. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also put some arctic grayling my cups. Grayling are a beautiful fish that I enjoy fishing for in Alaska. They have great blue/grey/green and some red combinations. They readily go for a fly, so I added few on the cups, mayflies to be exact. Grayling is fish that I have been using in pottery for several months and it is progressing nicely on these cups. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Because I travel and explore Alaska I am always captured by the people's adventurous life style and seasonal rhythms. In this next tow pictures I carved in the quintessential Alaskan bush plane and a commercial fishing drift boat, that is often seen in Bristol Bay, Prince William Sound, or Cook Inlet.</div>

<br />
Because I can not keep up with carving items as they dry I still enjoy my ash glazes and the LaLune turquoise glaze. I like how ash glazes create repetition and appear active. <br />

<br />
Finally, while I was cleaning the garage this fall I found some old Douglas fur from an old barge that I recycled years ago fro rustic furniture. I used what was left and made re-purposed boxes for sets of tumbers, with my old stand by brittle star slip theme. The wood has a nice earthy look that goes well with the glaze combination on the tumblers. <br />

In two weeks, I will selling my pots at a First Friday Show at Alice's Champagne Palace. I am looking forward to this event, as it is my first First Friday. After that, it is the Nutcracker Arts and Craft Fair the first weekend in December at Homer High School Gymnasium. With all that I am busy in the studio making pots. <br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Making pots over the past month I came to realize that it is truly a practice. This is the second season in my own studio creating; developing my forms, surface decorations, and glazes. There are a lot ideas out there tin the world, and I mean a lot. I am constantly inspired, but to get what I want to achieve is another matter. As I work on these ideas I think about my teachers, specifically Cynthia Bringle. I can not count the number of times I hear her words and ideas as I work through my process of creating pots. Practice, practice, practice, and edit. "If you don't like it now, you won't like it later," CB's words ring in my ears.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWSnTTQtUAZld63cNUamTV5D2P5Zy16W8lf9y5EAQocf1-paVAlIw5QU6UfPn2Jkp28LLkGEHiiFqeT4FFAFf1A8NRfO0KWNhwoSM7nr5Ajiq1vQv5BqLf2rRaQjQpf3jhjATfJjI1cb4/s1600/IMG_8868.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWSnTTQtUAZld63cNUamTV5D2P5Zy16W8lf9y5EAQocf1-paVAlIw5QU6UfPn2Jkp28LLkGEHiiFqeT4FFAFf1A8NRfO0KWNhwoSM7nr5Ajiq1vQv5BqLf2rRaQjQpf3jhjATfJjI1cb4/s320/IMG_8868.jpg" width="320" /></a>Speaking of practice, I have been exploring sgraffito, scratching or carving through slips or terra sigillata with stains. In the beginning, I was using slips only to find my liner glaze washed out the slip color, and if it was applied too thick, then it crazed. Argh! So, then I went through the process of finding a glaze that did not wash the color of the slip and not craze. After trying a couple of Val Cushing's glazes, I realized I needed to figure out the application method. Do I dip, brush, or spray? Best method is spraying, a light application is all it takes. I chalked that one up to success. However, I still was not happy with the clay burrs from carving in the slip when it was leather hard, even after brushing with a soft brush when it dried. Back to the Internet and books for more information. Finally, I found that several potters use terra sigallata, a finer clay slip, and carved when the clay was bone dry, after applying the terra sigillata. Back to the drawing board and more practice. and more experimenting. Next I started thinking about how I am looking at my subject matter and how I carve my lines. This was noticeable when I looked at my Instagram feeds. Looking at the picture allowed me to notice aspects I missed in the studio. I am asking myself questions like: Do I leave some black in the negative space that is carved white? Or do I leave it all white? How do I highlight the main feature? Accented line or small line? Then there is the aspect of combining colors or even considering glaze colors on the interior of horizontal forms that best compliments the outside surface decoration. Practice, practice, practice. </div>

In August, I was able to get my wares out to the local Homer Farmer's Market. It was a beautiful Saturday for selling pots. I met a lot of great people and got a lot of support and encouragement about my pottery. At the end of the month, I was accepted to show my work at <a href="http://www.homerictraders.com/" target="_blank">Homeric Traders</a>. This business is giving me the opportunity to rent space and sell my work at a low commission. I hope that this will get some folks interested in my work. Living 15 miles out of town I don't see a lot of tourist or town traffic, I am looking forward to having my pots in the heart of Homer. I made these break down shelves over a couple of days. They will be used for fairs and festivals in the future. The uprights are hinged and shelves are secured by dowels coming up through the cross braces. Just push the shelves down and they are secure. </div>

I am also making large containers and tumblers for Homeric Traders and the holidays. In the picture above right, I have a large crock that our local mushroom grower wants for brewing kombucha.<br />
<br />
Finally, I was able to focus the later part of August firing some pots. I was really happy with the results. I put new elements, in the kiln and with the controller I was able to run a solid E1firing.<br />

This summer has been a flurry of activity, both in the studio and
outside. From Prince William Sound to the Kuskokwim Bay I have done a lot of great fishing and traveling Alaska offers up many options with much daylight and great
opportunities for adventure. In the few short months of summer we plant,
harvest, catch, and play in one of the most beautiful places on the
planet. Here is a brief summary of what I have been doing in the
studio over the past three months.<br />
<br />
The main stay for the pottery is making Homer Brewery Company steins. This allows me to play with a lot of different ideas as I have a regular kiln firing schedule to meet the demand. Mugs are found on <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/JSizzly" target="_blank">Etsy</a> and I have more color options and will update soon. <br />

Since my Penland experience, I am enjoying working on the bottle form. My sights are set on making growlers for the local brewery, especially personalized growlers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Living in Homer is great. The people love local food and gardening. Here is a compost pot ordered by one of our localvores. <br />

I am also, making plates with Alaska marine and freshwater images. Still trying to get a glaze that reveals the color of the slip, but is not too glossy. I am not happy with Hansen's 5 x 20, so I am tring Val Cushing's transparent and soft matte at cone 6. Suggestion would be greatly appreciated. <br />

Mug production for the local coffee drinkers keeps moving forward. I really like the chameleon glaze from John's Britt's mid range glaze book.<br />

Finally, I have my first date with the local Homer Farmer's Market this weekend and <a href="http://www.homerictraders.com/" target="_blank">Homeric Traders</a> has given me space to sell my wares. <br />

My love for Alaska and the fishing will no doubt be showing up in more of my work as I head into the studio this fall and create more pottery. <br />

Looking back at the final four weeks of Penland's Spring Concentration, I made some great friends. I realize that working in a craft, in which you spend a large amount of time alone in the studio, this experience is essential for improving your game. At one point during this time Cynthia said to us, "You all know what to look for, ask each other for help." In retrospect, this opened a flood gate for us in regards to form and creative influences. People not only asked for help, but they moved around the studio more freely and commented on pieces people were making and offered advice and encouragement. How often does this happen in your studio at home?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2PazX-CnNWUclw0NsMCGzomr4sRgfoEi64cLhSILse08l8fklWl8esvUuDv3iRAbldFFw6B23vIj8oNyTBxp_7mRgs-rV2Q9XJOyQ9Fwutmumq-j62QOD3-Psv-nIe4df56PmoZmxlXE/s1600/IMG_7975.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2PazX-CnNWUclw0NsMCGzomr4sRgfoEi64cLhSILse08l8fklWl8esvUuDv3iRAbldFFw6B23vIj8oNyTBxp_7mRgs-rV2Q9XJOyQ9Fwutmumq-j62QOD3-Psv-nIe4df56PmoZmxlXE/s320/IMG_7975.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
During the fifth week we began throwing lidded forms, bottles, bottles with stoppers, and goblets. Followed by large bowls. Cynthia encouraged us to continue to edit our work, but also pushed us to make pieces in the kilns to get results. Obviously, I took this as a sign to be productive. It is a pattern of mine to get in the zone and work towards results, make many mistakes, and start over and grind through the process. The final three weeks of the concentration Cynthia had us focus on a goal. Mine was the bottle form, something I struggled with at home, having only taken one wheel throwing class last year, I was stuck at a learning plateau. I needed to get past this point. Cynthia encouraged me to throw dry and breath as I was pulling. In a stealthy move she would be next to my wheel while I was pulling a 5 pound clay bottle, and say, "Breathe Jeff." The bottle form improved, and as they dried I started to dabble more in carving. <br />

<br />
When I first worked with clay I loved to carve into the leather hard pieces. Though, it was very random and I lacked intent. Interestingly, while doodling in my studio this past winter I came up with a pattern that intrigued me. While throwing some of the bigger bottles, more an exercise to throw taller pieces, I realized that the form reminded me of large bottles used for milk. My Grandfather had a dairy farm and I vaguely remember that period of time when I was child and visited the farm. That time period and the doodles brought to mind art-deco images. I pursued this carving on several items. Experimenting and taking risks to obtain results are what the Penland experience was about.<br />

Finally, I started to play with the fish form. My love for fish and fly-fishing are always near at hand in my art. Here are several pieces which I used for stoppers or carved images on mugs and goblets. Another aspect I toyed with was surface texture using rope and faceting, using wrapped wire. I can only guess at how many of these pieces were recycled before they were finally glazed. If I made 200 items while at Penland, at least 200 were recycled. <br />

The last firing at Penland was done in a kiln named Julia Two. Previously we fired three firings in the final days of Julia One. After 150 firings salt kilns insides become corroded and the arch ceiling tends to collapse and needs replacing. The kiln is named for a former studio assistant who died in a automobile accident. Her husband created a fund to continue Julia's passion for the pottery and love for Penland. <a href="http://williambakerpottery.com/kilnbuilding/" target="_blank">Will Baker</a> was hired by Penland to build Julia Two. It was a great experience to watch, and occasionally help Will in this process. I also met Julia's husband, who helped Will during the first few days of construction. <br />

I am curious about what will take place in the studio when I get back home. Presently, Nicky and I are traveling back from North Carolina, visiting family along the way and enjoying time together camping and hiking. I leave for Homer tomorrow. I hope to be back in the studio by the middle of the week. However, as summer approaches I have taken on several jobs and will be teaching ceramics for two weeks as well, so my studio time will be cut short. My short term goals are to continue with art-deco carving and fish motifs. My long term goal is to build a soda kiln on our property. This means I will, slowly, be constructing a kiln shed with a concrete pad to accommodate the kiln. I am also looking into doing another Kickstarter Campaign next year to purchase the kiln materials. </div>

After 16 kiln firings I have a lot of reflecting to do on the past eight weeks. Due to the Internet connection at Penland I was not able to keep up with the blog posts. Instead, I will post a few highlights from the eight week concentration.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first two weeks focused on core techniques; creating unomi, tea bowls, mugs and pulling handles. We learned to make out pots thinner and create a balanced between our handle and the pot's form. We fired our pots in salt and reduction kilns, the more firings we did the more data we gathered for better results. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm8V4wkn13rZK3gUHPKffblIEgeiKeZE5MrhUbqf_esjeVQRRTF7UTJRfWMWw7kzOj6KPiNYxrR6THpkmx1rozAuElTcX7FFUglxhwdhSkbe-y9c8O3eNWOppNbjd4MP6kO4vKZ8mEmRI/s1600/IMG_7475.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm8V4wkn13rZK3gUHPKffblIEgeiKeZE5MrhUbqf_esjeVQRRTF7UTJRfWMWw7kzOj6KPiNYxrR6THpkmx1rozAuElTcX7FFUglxhwdhSkbe-y9c8O3eNWOppNbjd4MP6kO4vKZ8mEmRI/s200/IMG_7475.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The third and forth week of the concentration we learned about Minoan cookware and cooking with <a href="http://penland.org/blog/2015/05/cooking-out-minoan-style/#sthash.dzDOWe3y.dpbs" target="_blank">Jerolyn Morrison</a>. We built coiled pots in the Minoan style with tri-pod legs. The pots were then bisqued fired and the insides covered in bees wax. Finally, we cooked Minoan style food for the Penland community that consisted of lentils, chickpeas, chicken, and squid. It was delicious. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhocTJ34QKkJgSGaafaUu-XRfFJjSUeD4BL8oj3nyf74Ip4qXm0KtFtxFIzG8Uhi8weuEY0LwzVAwK8a1dW2TdHalS9ZjJ8lMiWwyPlwpPBQk7-Q1TG8eZrwCV6SKOIEx6gjUNrnJ_k_Ec/s1600/IMG_7600.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhocTJ34QKkJgSGaafaUu-XRfFJjSUeD4BL8oj3nyf74Ip4qXm0KtFtxFIzG8Uhi8weuEY0LwzVAwK8a1dW2TdHalS9ZjJ8lMiWwyPlwpPBQk7-Q1TG8eZrwCV6SKOIEx6gjUNrnJ_k_Ec/s200/IMG_7600.jpg" width="150" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfOwmK0jcRuOArcW-tFq4x_VU0TmDhjK8aWzzYHjUSjHyvApBgL1xgOVVXG0-Ji7cZz_eY85CHmj5TZsmpQTWgcw6Vr-NhruBIi4MeRi3Kanc44qry64ZRWWjQKWA0kZiXawNeepB0ZY4/s1600/IMG_7499.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfOwmK0jcRuOArcW-tFq4x_VU0TmDhjK8aWzzYHjUSjHyvApBgL1xgOVVXG0-Ji7cZz_eY85CHmj5TZsmpQTWgcw6Vr-NhruBIi4MeRi3Kanc44qry64ZRWWjQKWA0kZiXawNeepB0ZY4/s200/IMG_7499.jpg" width="150" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
By week four we were on to lidded forms and more firings. At this point we were encouraged by Cynthia to ask for others advise in the class. In retrospect this opened a flood gate of creativity in form<span style="color: #0000ee;">.</span> Most of my time was spent in the studio practicing, practicing, practicing. More to follow. </div>

center, and plenty of workbenches. The building has plenty of windows that
allow ample sunlight to wash over us.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>

In the beginning, Cynthia Bringle, our instructor gave the
assignment of producing mugs for the Penland Campus. “I don’t wanna see no more
paper cups,” she said. The next day we had all produced about twenty mugs.
Cynthia went around and realized that many of our mugs were too thick and
weighty.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>With that she gave us the
assignment of throwing cylinders out of three two-pound balls of clay and three
thee-pound balls of clay. We cut them in length to look for even wall thickness.
This was a great lesson. She is very firm and direct, if she doesn’t like what
you made she will let you know. We all thought that the lesson got to the
foundation of how we throw pots, and most of the students, people who have been
professional potters for many years, said they felt like they were starting
over again. </div>

Over the past
week, Cynthia gave us several demonstrations on pulling handles from the mug.
“Practice, practice, practice,” she said. “ Pulling handles is a tool,” she has
stated many times. This has really paid off after doing it 50 times.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>During the past week I have easily thrown
over 50 mugs and literally only kept 20.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">

Finally, we started throwing tea bowls, or yunomis, off the
hump. The bisque kilns have been running continuously. Saturday and Sunday we
glazed our first set of mugs. Our first firings begin tomorrow; one salt firing
and one gas reduction, both at cone 10. The students of the class have
developed comradery and everyone is supportive. We enjoy a great level of
abilities, skill, and ages in the course. I am looking forward to sharing and learning
from these folks as the week’s progress.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLosEzNC1pJiC-euGr-kl1dKGdd0k4hcWCnsszyjTDIfLryy68rsySn0eEsf0aGcXSzMDYV9vKOKDq9OZWsCeyt1WGRk5MSkquT17z6dRvnQXbv2xf7wvxsS4TVOUBh-cp67jpl0hSkuM/s1600/IMG_7146.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLosEzNC1pJiC-euGr-kl1dKGdd0k4hcWCnsszyjTDIfLryy68rsySn0eEsf0aGcXSzMDYV9vKOKDq9OZWsCeyt1WGRk5MSkquT17z6dRvnQXbv2xf7wvxsS4TVOUBh-cp67jpl0hSkuM/s1600/IMG_7146.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Another new glaze on the shelf is this Tripplett chameleon glaze with 2% copper carbonate.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDQcm25kp767JeF77QGL0baL-rVFuMQaB59kDkrEQge3JyNyuFiTl1kufwyn9xcPqC04yqpzObsJYOU-b85iLI3epfuD92SdyY7arcEHvbYiRZ5JJT_n4mo461HZIwpQ_wGhLUpUm0GJs/s1600/IMG_7149.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDQcm25kp767JeF77QGL0baL-rVFuMQaB59kDkrEQge3JyNyuFiTl1kufwyn9xcPqC04yqpzObsJYOU-b85iLI3epfuD92SdyY7arcEHvbYiRZ5JJT_n4mo461HZIwpQ_wGhLUpUm0GJs/s1600/IMG_7149.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Here is the same glaze on a red clay body with the same glossy base 4% rutile as you see above. The red clay body lends itself to a nice blue rutile.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdQbCeBPKOhE6OvB3Ka0Jg5m-of-3PLXqCVsCTvoQyaj-GwOJsIWXllZfLbaEI3G77Coz3bG3RBEaIjN6aTvhL-AkLhFmgwZlDKeQPui41nS-CSx8TrY3IGFl3sojlqrJLWd5e1JUJLr0/s1600/IMG_7150.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdQbCeBPKOhE6OvB3Ka0Jg5m-of-3PLXqCVsCTvoQyaj-GwOJsIWXllZfLbaEI3G77Coz3bG3RBEaIjN6aTvhL-AkLhFmgwZlDKeQPui41nS-CSx8TrY3IGFl3sojlqrJLWd5e1JUJLr0/s1600/IMG_7150.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Here are the Homer Brewing Company tankards. There are three glaze lines, each on the red and white clay bodies. So, far the only draw back is the middle left tankard on the red clay body. It bubbled and is rough. After consulting with John Britt on a Facebook site about Exploring Mid Range Glazes he stated, "<span data-reactid=".4g.1:3:1:$comment672541369540670_672548412873299:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:0"></span><span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" data-reactid=".4g.1:3:1:$comment672541369540670_672548412873299:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body"><span class="UFICommentBody" data-reactid=".4g.1:3:1:$comment672541369540670_672548412873299:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0"><span data-reactid=".4g.1:3:1:$comment672541369540670_672548412873299:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0.$end:0:$0:0">There
are more gasses in the clay and so if you bisque longer it can help (100 per hour from 1100 - 1900 F ). That is an extreme example but it can

Finally, I wanted to try something different with bowls. Here is some wax resist on the red clay body with some dots (June Perry red glaze) and bull kelp (weathered bronze). The application of the glazes need to be thicker. <br />

I will continue to blog when I get the opportunity at Penland. Thanks for reading. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323359302824320955.post-16884131201389764732015-02-18T17:27:00.000-08:002015-03-01T18:28:50.793-08:00Barrel Firing Second Time Around<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Yesterday, I lit the down draft barrel kiln for a second time this winter. I threw in four small pots sprayed with ferric chloride, sprinkled with salt and sugar, wrapped in aluminum saggar and one large pot similarly prepped. Inside of the large pot I put in a couple of pieces with yellow ocher, red iron oxide, and copper sulfate.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5EnosBzsNwRQSuQyfXGslf6uMWxverN0HAar_Am80FDaPm1MdFZOGcXGf_r0sBrmehQS9g_p6hO0xbDxjuunwl4UcvCVG0HHBxb14sztIkysS3O2G-BtdWSPIszVdA1qGrvvTmznvmFY/s1600/IMG_7122.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5EnosBzsNwRQSuQyfXGslf6uMWxverN0HAar_Am80FDaPm1MdFZOGcXGf_r0sBrmehQS9g_p6hO0xbDxjuunwl4UcvCVG0HHBxb14sztIkysS3O2G-BtdWSPIszVdA1qGrvvTmznvmFY/s1600/IMG_7122.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are the results. My intention with the large pot was to make it look like fossilized dessert sandstone. I have brittle stars and trilobites slip trailed. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBDSvoVSQ-cX2IbusOx4EpqGzFAQy-uGL7PtI7SIFZ8o1Cspel2TQinEJAjgj8H8ujNj3aP-0YwM5gHI5tLxre4ZsTb5BzZlS3H7nu1QXdY1CuIgXPzL9bIhyJFKe_-E6rNoQPN_eFP3w/s1600/P1020563.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBDSvoVSQ-cX2IbusOx4EpqGzFAQy-uGL7PtI7SIFZ8o1Cspel2TQinEJAjgj8H8ujNj3aP-0YwM5gHI5tLxre4ZsTb5BzZlS3H7nu1QXdY1CuIgXPzL9bIhyJFKe_-E6rNoQPN_eFP3w/s1600/P1020563.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
The other pots came out nice. The lower right pot was in the big pot. The only issue I have now is the with the terra sigilatta. After it dries it cracks, which is an interesting effect, however, if I buff it as soon as it dries, then I can eliminate the cracks. A couple of the pots were burnished before the terra sigilatta application. I don't know if this makes a difference yet. <br />

It has been warm in Homer this February. Sure, we had a week of cold, but the warmth is back. Presently, it is blowing 30 mph out with gusts at 45 mph. Yikes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc4XmvefPgD8Mnjme3usNxY6DOWnToYYs0phGcqVH42TJqlaD1jpGHlGwlXYlKZkaaMouUSl3DtNjyvInLFV41NHXLUirPl_YdjKP7JYnbWNRfbgcviil1Jli3PJ9EA1PwzR7Z_6Mdl-M/s1600/IMG_7096.PNG" height="320" width="180" /></div>
I loaded the kiln last week with the hopes of seeing some great results. Everything was a prototype for future lines and projects, so I kind of set myself up for high expectations. Don't do it. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Out of six boat trays the two below came out with no structural cracks and some nice glaze combos. The two below are the survivors. I sprayed the glazes on using a low volume high pressure spray gun on the outside of the boats. I really like the results. <br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The above boat tray sank unfortunately. It had several areas were the bottom opened up and the handles were too fragile. The other three the bottoms completely opened up. It seems porcelain works better that the stoneware, but it has more memory, so it is prone to distorting. I may have to lay these on their tops as the dry, to prevent cracking. I don't want to abandon the design, so I will try another half dozen.<br />
<br />
On a positive note, the Homer Brewery tankard prototypes came out with some nice results. I will be running the two lines below. More to come.<br />

Meanwhile, I had a wonderful weekend playing drums with Tyson James and the Hot Strangs on Friday and North Country Cajun Club on Saturday night at Alice's Campaign Palace. I am very fortunate to play with some great musicians. <br />

On a final note, I have to share the menu for our weekly Downton Abbey dinner. This week Nicky was the chef. She had fun preparing the menu, based on the fact we live out East End Road and current events. A great meal was had by all who attended.</div>

Check out this picture from early January. The driveway is complete ice and there is no snow in the yard. For Alaska, that is crazy. Driving this trailer on the driveway was a bit crazy as well. I received a ton of clay and supplies in January. Freight service up here means picking up your supplies in town. Having the old snow machine trailer is nice. I am thankful the roads were wet and not icy. This is 1500 pounds of clay and 500 pounds of glazing supplies. It should hold me over until the summer. </div>

This week I made a down draft barrel kiln, as per <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Alternative-Kilns-Firing-Techniques-Ceramics/dp/1579909523" target="_blank">Alternative Kilns and Firing Techniques: Raku, Saggar, Pit, Barrel (A Lark Ceramics Book)</a>. A pretty easy design, considering I had everything I needed lying around the yard. I had planned on taking more pictures of the process, but the cold weather kept me occupied with getting it built. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-0WmO8IaEBWGhStzwFdCQamvOQCvZObemN4QgkkRccJ7JfJgKLoHC81SzS2Il0WpTju3SMZRnxz7WdeVZvRvm0-RAYS4KdwVddDjZr2KcWjwQdXYXjytHyLB-4_9mBwrEbgOJ5YFoDzc/s1600/IMG_7055.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7Y_i-PT-4hIwAWuqh32WA85Yn5Ms8uravSWNxVF0i5Iz5D_eUN5Jhc0AQC7O9YPffZ5Pm_S8zAi4YekGBDWGOivZfEwr78gi0D0yQ2SE6muHjtIHd0gLH06spGXBs9RSiG3G5rOUfCgk/s1600/IMG_7056.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7Y_i-PT-4hIwAWuqh32WA85Yn5Ms8uravSWNxVF0i5Iz5D_eUN5Jhc0AQC7O9YPffZ5Pm_S8zAi4YekGBDWGOivZfEwr78gi0D0yQ2SE6muHjtIHd0gLH06spGXBs9RSiG3G5rOUfCgk/s1600/IMG_7056.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
After building the kiln I loaded it by placing the ceramic wares three inches above the bottom metal grate in a sawdust nest. Next, I sprinkled red iron oxide, yellow ocher, and copper carbonate on three pots that were not wrapped in aluminum foil for a saggar firing. These pieces had ferric chloride (used to clean electronics) poured over them, then they were each sprinkled with 1 tsp of sugar and salt. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh682JmUPQboi_pfRsqCnqzI1AMjKtJeYCHC88hWsvqfvxZ3RjadsfFnrzHkHzWpVIGlvAw1qB_hZGrBb25Q-wYM0voEPVpATgrCvqXzBGN0fzhsVNrAs8YmmZvlEdn-pWCM3Uz6tZxnzg/s1600/IMG_7057.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh682JmUPQboi_pfRsqCnqzI1AMjKtJeYCHC88hWsvqfvxZ3RjadsfFnrzHkHzWpVIGlvAw1qB_hZGrBb25Q-wYM0voEPVpATgrCvqXzBGN0fzhsVNrAs8YmmZvlEdn-pWCM3Uz6tZxnzg/s1600/IMG_7057.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
I added more sawdust and some lighter fluid soaked kindling along with scrap paper. Building up more sawdust I topped the barrel with kindling and let the fire. It took several hours to get the convection going. I eventually heated the elbow with a weed burner. After that, the down draft started in earnest. I let the fire go over night. In the morning I was rewarded with some great colors.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh66TsfY7B-aj9363Uev5tpzrfm-9LipgosqFtBCXXJtbw7W87kDFIxGX03K0-w23KQL-Cbx2tBLjXvPZtTb9Edaxtg1ARUfASy5-vswxRDcHh9twYsGhAginhTo3DG7Pc_t3sFQjnqBM/s1600/IMG_7061.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh66TsfY7B-aj9363Uev5tpzrfm-9LipgosqFtBCXXJtbw7W87kDFIxGX03K0-w23KQL-Cbx2tBLjXvPZtTb9Edaxtg1ARUfASy5-vswxRDcHh9twYsGhAginhTo3DG7Pc_t3sFQjnqBM/s1600/IMG_7061.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
The pot on the far right was in the aluminum saggar. These colors remind me of the southwest sandstone in the United States. With that idea I am going for a similar firing with the pot below, which is coil built. I hope the <a href="http://skeptic.smugmug.com/Nature/Rocks-and-fossils-at-Houston/i-rCsjFD7" target="_blank">Ordovician brittle stars and trilobites</a> slip trails come through after I apply a slip to the piece after it is bisqued. If I apply it now, I think it would only streak the red iron oxide color in the slip trail. I will keep you posted. <br />

During the Christmas holidays I had several people show up to the studio and purchase pots. However, the highlight was giving my pottery as gifts to good friends.<br />
<br />
In regards to the Kickstarter project, I am finishing up the last few pieces and will be getting those out to everyone towards the end of the January. I hope those of that received mugs or bowls are enjoying them.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
In the studio, I am starting new projects. Ladles are something I always wanted to build, not for soup or punch, but for the sauna, Obviously, they have a dual purpose.<br />

In order to get the pots out the door I spend a lot of time paying attention to the details. The pots are coming out great, the glaze fits and the colors are working. I am learning a lot about the kiln and glaze chemistry. <br />

Fortune would have it that a local potter had room in her gas kiln. I had three boxes of cone 10 pots bisqued and ready to be fired. I looked througt <a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Complete-Guide-High-Fire-Glazes/dp/1600592163">John Britt's High Fire Glaze</a> book. I made a batch of Turner's celadon, Jeff's red, Leach 4,3,2,1, St John's black, mino shino and Pinnell's weathered bronze. I am really please with the results. </div>

The last two glaze firings revealed some nice surprises. A combination of the glossy base glaze with rutile makes for a nice over lap with the glossy base glaze combinations of copper carbonate and cobalt carbonate which have a green and blue color depending on the combinations. </div>

Lately, I have changed the foot of my mugs. I trim less to save time and like the look of the flat bottoms. However, I roll mug for a final touch and then impress a snail shell around the bottom of the foot. Also, the handles are improving due to practice and I am concentrating on making the handles thinner and lighter in weight.</div>

This week I am packing the kiln for a bisque firing. Waiting for some mugs to dry for the load in the this picture. I am looking forward to glazing these bowls to match up with the mugs.<br />

While I throw pots for the pledges and work on glaze recipes I am always looking for new ideas and inspirations for future projects. Today my neighbor Amy sent me the picture of brittle stars and trilobites fossils. She thought I would like it and I did. I will mess around with it and see what happens over time. <br />

This program is to encourage Alaska native students to become engineers and scientists as career pathways. It is a great program that offers fun hands-on approaches to learning about science and living on a college campus. I am part of this program as a paid chaperone, but I believe it is a great offering for these kids as well. It gives kids the opportunity to build their own computers and keep them. Then it provides the students with ongoing support through out their secondary education. <div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Rjv3O5RuTgesouvi_0XfvJwC91oHdmam0iFSX48195QAOFxmbzr3WkLBo687onUhiZ63NpxOwDVvlKVFh4z6G6APSy5g1sVNSAbICM34yIXuEtmM8Ae3HmTa4Oc2K7J9BseE_X3pbkI/s640/blogger-image-311164709.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Rjv3O5RuTgesouvi_0XfvJwC91oHdmam0iFSX48195QAOFxmbzr3WkLBo687onUhiZ63NpxOwDVvlKVFh4z6G6APSy5g1sVNSAbICM34yIXuEtmM8Ae3HmTa4Oc2K7J9BseE_X3pbkI/s640/blogger-image-311164709.jpg"></a></div>I am looking forward to next week, back in the studio glaze firing and rolling along with the Kickstarter pledges. Part of the struggle is trimming the foot and not having the bottom cave in on you. So I have incorporated a plaster bat on the wheel. The intent is to dry out the foot, there by giving me the leather hardness for a successful trim. So far, so good. The above picture shows rutile slip trialing. Hope it works with my glaze.</div>

I heard Kate Maury on <a href="http://thepotterscast.com/53">The Potter's Cast</a> the other day and she related the craft or artistry of pottery to music and this hit a beat or chord with me. She stated that the influential ceramics teacher, Val Cushings, likened pottery to improvisational jazz. The reference was to jazz in that you really need to know your licks, have the ability to communicate with others, and do your time and practice. Lately, I keep talking about working on my chops in the the studio. As Kate Stated, "you really need your regiment, and sit down, and be there for when it happens. Recently, I sat down and threw 12 mugs and I wrote about how making handles multiple times and how this taught me the subtleties of creating a better handle; economically and aesthetically. The last two days I also threw nine larger bowls and learned a lot about how to open a bowl. I saw how it improves the floor of the bowl and by using double ribs, one inside and one outside simultaneously that is helps in creating the final thickness of the wall, or at least tells you whether to pull up one more time.<br />

<br />
Back to music. The reason I brought this up is because I have a gig this weekend. I am playing in Anchorage with Johnny B. A local piano player and composer of multiple styles of music. I will be backing him on the drums and percussion in a production of his original pieces, accompanied by images of Alaska in picture and movie formant. Many of the pictures and movies are taken by <a href="http://zatzworks.com/about-us">Dainel Zatz</a> and have appeared in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Alaskas-Coolest-Animals-Biggest-Bears/dp/B000FFPKF0">Alaska Coolest Mamal DVD</a>. As a drummer I have learned that because I have put in my time over the years, that I actually get to be there for when great moments happen; when you are clicking with fellow musician. You feel it and the audience feels it, and that is the moment. This is especially easy and fun when backing up such a fine musician as Johnny Bushell. So, prior to this weekend, all the pots have been trimmed and the base glaze are slaken, and we are off to Anchorage. Looking forward to being there for when it happens.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323359302824320955.post-61153848583069373702014-10-21T21:07:00.002-07:002014-10-21T21:07:45.710-07:00First Glaze Firing at the Studio<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This weekend I kicked off my Kickstarter campaign to raise $2000 in
tuition for an eight week workshop I will be taking this spring at <a href="http://www.penland.org/">Penland School of Craft in North Carolina</a>. It started out with great guns. By Monday I was
at the $1770 mark with 25 backers. Not too bad. It has dried up a bit
today with no backers. However, I am not going to push it out until the
next weekend. Kick starter allows you 30 days to receive full funding.
At this point, I feel hopeful and inspired that the goal will be achieved. Thanks to all those who
have supported me thus far. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The inspiration got me in the studio this weekend for my first glaze firing in the kiln. I glazed 33 tiles with variations based on the Glossy Base 1from Ron Roy's book <i><span class="st">Mastering Cone 6 <em>Glazes</em></span></i><span class="st">. I varied oxides percents, then combined two at a time for the results in the picture below. I am trying to keep it simple. But I can see the next glaze firing I am going to trying three combinations of oxides.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO5Ee1lZu2FGnoJcqoFqLYzAm4qxw1A7KUOIfUxTQ-CPxt0SWeU_diVXljpsa8DocKw7SCPL9BsthdFLSKNGvMG6huwTZR1Q-MZdXS2yf7dVF1qSnWqjuOJlaxC9gUZO5zdjL8m6h6jr0/s1600/IMG_6441.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO5Ee1lZu2FGnoJcqoFqLYzAm4qxw1A7KUOIfUxTQ-CPxt0SWeU_diVXljpsa8DocKw7SCPL9BsthdFLSKNGvMG6huwTZR1Q-MZdXS2yf7dVF1qSnWqjuOJlaxC9gUZO5zdjL8m6h6jr0/s1600/IMG_6441.JPG" height="150" width="200" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Unfortunately, all the glazes caused the Baja mason stain in the slip trail to fade. I wondered if this would happen. Upon further research I am now trying a saturated 25% red iron oxide in my slip and 5% rutile in another. From the 33 tiles, I picked nine that I will try to limit to three for the next glaze firing. I have a nice yellow, blue, and green. I also tried a standard variegated blue glaze that came out looking great.</div>
<br />

Another pottery blogger known as <a href="http://www.artbyfuzzy.com/blog/2012/07/09/glaze-tests-spring-2012/">Art by Fuzzy </a>experimented with Rob Roby's clear liner glaze and oxides. Since I knew I was going to make a batch of the clear liner in bulk, I figured I would half the batch and add my favorite mix from his color palette. I chose 1% cobalt carbonate, 1% copper carbonate, and 5% rutile. While I like the blue color, unfortunately the Baja mason stain brittle stars were buried on many pieces. If the slip was built up, then you can make out the brittle star. Over all the glaze looks nice for a first trial, and I really like the liner. Behind the cups and mugs you can see a picture that is the result of the 100 gm test glazes mixed into one bucket. This a pleasant combination of greens and browns. The urn in the back is glossy base 1 with red iron oxide washed brushed on the bisque ware. It looks nice.</div>

While I waited for the kiln to hit the cone 6 mark Sunday I threw a dozen cups, a couple of bowls, two pitchers, and a bottle. On Monday I pulled handles and trimmed. I really got to appreciate the pulling of handles when you have so many to do at one time. It actually helps you achieve a better handle. I found myself making subtle changes and being more intentional about the form.</div>

Here I am in the great expanse known as the basin and range of the western United States, to be more specific, eastern Nevada. I was able to schedule a trip to see my Dad and spend some quality time hunting for elk. Dad received a cow elk permit this year, so we met up in Las Vegas and headed north for the pinon and juniper country. I really enjoyed my time with Dad. We shared the objective of finding elk as well as sharing tons of laughs. The country offered expansive vistas and subtle colors in a dry and arid landscape that had just received a large amount of precipitation two weeks priot. The plants that were not charred from fires over the past 20 years were verdant and flowering.<br />

Hunting for an animal allows you the ability to closely observe the natural world. You get up at the crack of down and go to camp at sun down. You are there when the animals are on the move and you wait, and walk, and you observe all that goes on around you. In the evening, you see thousands of spiders ballooning, as they use the winds to disperse and find some new territory for hunting. Evenings also reveal the mountain blue birds flying for airborne insects, bull elk begin bugling, and the temperature drops enough to put on a coat and hat. In the morning, the grackles and ravens fly from their roosts to forage, the bulls bugle in an attempt to gather cows, and the light opens enough to reveal the tracks of those out the night before.<br />

On the fifth day, after many days of not seeing any cows, we finally spotted a group of twenty elk. Although we were not able to get a shot at this group we were fortunate enough see two cows and a bull on the way back to camp. Just as the sun was dipping below the horizon Dad was able to take a 500 pound cow elk. Being a mile from our camp and just near the road we were able to get the cow to camp and hang the meat for cooling. <br />

After the hunt we took a trip to Las Vegas and checked out Aardvark Clay and Supply. This offered me the chance to purchase some items for the studio. Usually, I order on-line or use a catalog. This was a great hands-on shopping experience for me. I procured some glaze materials for my cone 6 glazing trials I will be doing next week.</div>

Another highlight of the trip was exploring the back country on some jeep roads with my Dad. Nevada's basin and range is a great place to see beautiful and complex geology and flora. It offered me a chance to appreciate some expressive desert colors and possibilities for future surface decorations.<br />

The last week afforded me some time to set up the Raku kiln. I
created three batches of glaze: Simon Leach's Crackle, copper matte, and
turquoise crackle. The firing was problematic with the kiln being stuck
around 1730 degree Fahrenheit. The copper matte and Simon's crackle
needed the 1850 mark. However the turquoise came out, even though it is a
great red color. After checking the great inter-web, I think my entry and exhaust port are too small, notice the orange flame in the exhaust port and flu. So, I will attempt another firing with a large exhaust port. Another theory is to back out the burner from the port so it can draw in secondary air for cleaner gas consumption. Yet another method is to turn the burner down, counter intuitive, but a common point many have made. So, here is what I did; exhaust port is 5 inches and entry port is 4 inches, leaving an inch of air to get in with the burner pulled away. If it is not windy tomorrow, then I will give another try.<br />

Meanwhile, I am preparing for moose camp in a remote location in Alaska. At this point I am looking forward to spending some time in the woods with the objective of filling up the freezer with some moose meat. Getting ready for a wilderness hunting trip in Alaska is quite an endeavor. There is a lot that goes into having everything you need and flying it in with limits on weight. Since we have been hunting and rafting throughout the state we have the quality gear and a gear list. The gear list is essential, it is continually being revised and tweaked every time we go out. The food prep is another ordeal in itself. With that I am off to prepare another meal. All of the framing, insulating, and sheet rock work are finished. It appears to me that most remodeling or basic construction always entails some problem solving. Today was the three-way switch that turned the outside lights to the garage and studio. A job that should take a half hour ended up being three. Got it right in the end. Now I am awaiting the mud and taping to begin. The room is brighter and feels more open. I am sure the 10' by 20' space will fill up with equipment and pots in no time. </div>

Finally, I cleared all the sheet rock from the garage bay next to the studio and was able to do my first bisque firing. Things are heating up. Looking forward to making some sample glaze tiles next and exploring some glaze possibilities. The next adventure will be making some mugs and bowls with the cone 6 clay using brittle star theme. </div>

It is framed in, thanks to the help of my good friend Pete Kramer. The next step is running the rest of the electrical wiring for the lights, then insulating and moving on to hanging the sheet rock. No pots have been thrown for the last week. Instead, I divide my time between kayak guiding and working on the studio. <br />

I created my own slip and added 10% of a Baja mason stain I used on my sauna project years ago. I really like the brittle star design and I am hoping it does not flake in the bisque firing. As for the the bisque firing. The kiln is at the house and I hope to have the 220 volt wiring done my next week. I am placing an order for kiln shelves and more supplies. Also, the studio walls are coming along. I have to frame one more wall and put the ceiling joists in place. After that wiring, insulation, and sheet rock.</div>

<b>Kickstarter Project</b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Another project I have going is a Kickstarter project for helping defer my tuition at Penland this coming spring. I thinking about using this new design for rewards for those who help fund me in this project. It will give my a goal for the winter and get my pots in the hands of those who enjoy them.</div>
